Hi everyone, I am currently working with a Mercedes-Benz dealership in Minneapolis who has a great car for sale- a 1 owner, 2003 M-B C240 4matic. Only 56,000 miles. Runs great, totally clean inside. Not a single ding on the outside. Bought at the Same MB dealer in 03, and has all maintenance records at the dealership that sold it. Great car, especially since it’s a one owner, and nobody else but the dealer has serviced it!

Here’s my question. This is the first time I will have bought my own car (I’m trading in my 2004 Honda Accord EX-V6L Coupe – It has 108,000 miles on it). My father feels as though it’s concerning that the vehicle is sold "As-Is" with no warranty. I looked around at other vehicles, at all types of dealerships… And unless the car was closer to $20k, and was MY 2007 or newer, it didn’t have a dealer warranty (typically 30 days or 1,000 miles)…

My father would feel a lot more comfortable if I could negotiate this into the deal. The car already has a sold sticker on it, my financing is approved, and I am to meet with the dealer tomorrow. Question for the more experienced used car buyer- Is this warranty imperative, especially given it’s great service history? Also, would I get a lot of push back (perhaps even a deal-break?) if I were to ask for it? What would you do?

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
@ A – That’s my thought as well. This vehicle’s Carfax is clean as a whistle. Purchased at the same dealership it’s for sale at now, and incrementally each and every maintenance has been performed on it. Any ideas on how to talk the dealer into even a 30 day warranty (in case the water pump does blow 5 miles away from the dealership on day 1…) ?

I have a 2004 infiniti and when the warranty ran out, I paid around $1400 to get two years of extended warranty on it from infiniti. The same bumper to bumper deal you get with new cars. Depending on how much you are paying for this car, you might consider getting an extended warranty from the same dealership or purchase it from a 3rd party. Check Kelly’s blue book and find out how much this car is worth to begin with, and if it’s worth paying 1-2000 dollars for its warranty. Maintaining Mercs can be very expensive. They might charge you around 1000 dollars just to change a CD changer\stereo or a broken motor for an electric seat.
Although, I gotta say, a 2003 merc with 56K miles is very hard to come by and may not need serious maintenance for a long time.

edit: you can just pitch the idea to them and see what they say. Be firm at first; they may or may not call your bluff. I’m personnaly very glad I got the warranty for my car because I’ve used it a few times for what would have cost more than what I paid. And I have the peace of mind. It’s a gamble though.
