Depends what is wrong with it.
If it is a somewhat newer Mercedes and it has a problem like Blown Head Gasekt, it could go to like $3000 kinda quick…. whether teh engine is OK and a new head gasket is installed (25% to 40% this is done,) or whether the whole engine is yanked, not left to chance, and a new one swapped.
This could get to like $5000 since Mercedes does fetch a premium, and does have much mechanical complexity and German pieces that need to seemlessly integrate. Not saying it isnt worth it, but yes it is a Mercedes and costs more.
If your car just needs a sensor may cost like $200 for the sensor, $100 plus for Diagnostic (did that computer fee with my Ford Escort, and it was still $100, lol) and $60 for Labor, hard to justify much for a sensor….
It really depends. Yo may have to pay the price for your lovely mercedes acting up.
Dont give up on it yet, it is a beautiful car. Now you need to be prepared to actually spend Mercedes money on your Mercedes.

Pro and Cons of 2004 Mercedes-Benz E320?
Posted by admin | Under Mercedes Benz History Sunday May 23, 2010Since I have two older brothers that are car freaks. One of them works for Toyota company. I am told that Mercedes-Benz are expensive for repairs.
I have been looking for a German car with excellent history. I am also expanding my options like Passat or Jetta. Thanks.
Early production E-Class of model series W211 (the series you are considering) were having quite a number of problems. However, 2004 should have most of them eliminated (maybe except the weird braking system that was there till 2006 facelift when they finally got rid of this).
The car is definitely good at taking you from A to B where the distance can be anything from two blocks to the cross-country trip. One notable feature of the E-Class (as well as most Benz products) that they try to isolate you from the outside environment as much as possible; you will not get too much engine sound inside, you will barely get any noise inside. The steering is not bothering you with excessive feedback and suspension will smooth out any potholes, leaving you with minimal road feel at the same time. As there is nothing wrong with these features, people that used to drive BMWs or Audis will complain on the lack of "feel" and "sportiness". If peace and comfort is what you desire, you’ll feel at home in the E-Class.

Hey all, recently my convertible top went out. (luckily the up and over position) and I cant figure out what is keeping it from working properly. I really don’t know where to begin to fix this problem without bringing it to the DEALERSHIP…
Basically from what I can trouble shoot myself the motor is not out. I can hear it trying to do its job. Windows go down when top is unlatched in front. The sensor light on the control panel is blinking.
Does anyone know of any other COMPONENTS I can check?
Are there fuses that can be burnt out? If so where would they be?
I really appreciate any advice. These cars have to much going on for something that should be an easy fix…Thank you…
Since the electric motor runs there’s chance that the system is running out of hydraulic oil – there may be a leak or a valve fails to open (or it is not being opened because of sticking sensor or…).
The only way is to hook up the diagnostic computer and retrieve the fault codes from the electronic module that controls the soft top. Further checking would rely on the actual values of sensors and switched that are connected to the electronic module.
Therefore there’s not much of the DIY that could be performed to bring it back to life, i’m afraid.
