A History of Mercedes Sl Parts and Models

Saturday Dec 26, 2009

In the 1950’s, the war was over and the American economy was on the upswing. The future looked bright and customers were in search of something exciting, a race car that can match the enthusiasm generated by the era. Mercedes responded with the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL in 1954, an icon of design and innovation. Its doors were hinged at the roof and when opened, looked like the outstretched wings of a seagull. Nicknamed the “Gullwing” for its unique upward-opening doors, the 300SL was the first car ever to be equipped with fuel-injection technology. This doubled the engine’s power from 115 hp to 240 hp and helped the Gullwing achieve a top speed of 260 km/h, making it the fastest production car of the period.

Following the success of the Gullwing on many racing circuits, Mercedes Benz decided to create a luxury sports car class based on it. Minus the Gullwing doors, the body style remained as a 2-door coupe convertible with a hard roof that can be retracted into the lower body frame. Body styling emphasized aerodynamics, given the nature of the Gullwing as a race car. This was also to attract more buyers since body styling at the time favored aggressive, curvilinear forms. Owing to its heritage of technical brilliance, Mercedes SL parts boasted precision steering and independent suspension, allowing better drive control and comfort. The class was named SL which stood for Sport Light.

In 1957, the Mercedes 300 SL roadster rolled out of the assembly lines. A similar looking line 190 SL was also started. The 190 SL had a 105 hp engine and enjoyed a bigger production than the 300 SL, selling a total of 25,881 units. Both W198 models were discontinued in 1963, replaced by the “pagoda-roof” W112 models. Cars of this line sported advanced Mercedes SL parts like a fuel-injected, six-cylinder engine and lightweight aluminum fittings. All models were rear-wheel drive and equipped with independent rear suspension. Many early models came with both a retractable hard top and a soft top, but there were also versions such as the “California Coupe” that only had hardtop configurations. Members of this line included the 230 SL, 250 SL, and 280 SL.

During the period between 1972 and 1989, several SL models in the R107 (Reihe series) were introduced to replace the aging W112 line. These models were a cross between the SL line and the Mercedes W114 model, carrying a small chassis with the SL’s large engine. R107 was later replaced by R129, starting with R129 300 SL in 1989. A variant of this class, the 600 SL, was most luxurious and heaviest SLs ever built. It featured options such as a CD changer, all-leather interior, V12 engine, and other standard Mercedes SL parts. While the SL series underwent slight design modifications in 1994 and 1999, it was becoming apparent that the decades-long SL series is losing ground to its more aggressive competitors.

Mercedes completely overhauled the SL line and in 2001, unveiled a brand new SL boasting a brand new body style with an electrically-controlled folding steel roof. This was followed by the 2004 Mercedes Benz SL and 2004 Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG. In 2005, the entire SL lineup was again refreshed. Mercedes SL parts for these models included automatic climate control, power steering and locks, active body control suspension, anti-theft system, and cruise control. Safety features, which Mercedes has been known for, were standard in all models.

What would you think of a family that had a Mercedes SUV and a Lexus Sports car?

Friday Dec 25, 2009

Not my family btw.

Umm… rich, or have huge debts, but I’d probably assume they were just rich… probably spend too much on things that don’t matter. I’d wonder if they invest as much into their actual family, as opposed to all of the materials. But I have never had that kind of money, so don’t really know what I’d do with it! I’d like to think I’d be sensible and live an ordinary life and keep my money a bit of a secret… but I think I would splurge a bit, lol

1990 SL500 Convertible Mercedes Benz Hard Top wont come off..Please help Mercedes Benz enthusiasts!!?

Friday Dec 25, 2009

My SL500 Hard Top convertible wont come off, I’m supposed to manually take off the hard-top by pressing this red button inside the car to partially release it….When I press the button I hear the clicks but the top is supposed to release about 4 inches, then I’m supposed to remove it. The soft top automatically folds up however the hard top is stuck i guess….I’ve been told that maybe it has something to do with the oil leak it has…..if anyone has any ideas about the cost of the repair, or if anyone knows whats wrong with the car please tell me!

PLEASE HELP

This is my wife’s one year anniversary present and I would hate myself if the best part of the car didn’t work :-(

Go back to the guy who sold it to you …this doesn’t sound like any big thing…your just not doing something right..I think!

Mercedes Benz CLK 55 AMG Convertible

Thursday Dec 24, 2009

The Mercedes-Benz W209 cars have been produced since 2002. They are sold under the CLK-Class model names. The W209 is based on the W203 C-Class. It replaced the C208 CLK-Class after 2004 which were the first car to carry the CLK moniker.
The W209 is available in two body styles, a coupe and a cabriolet, and is manufactured with diesel and petrol engines ranging from four cylinder (CLK200) to eight cylinder (CLK500 and CLK63AMG). The cabriolet (Designated with an A, as in CLK500A) features a fully automatic retractable soft top covered by a metal tonneau that can be raised and lowered from outside the vehicle using the key fob.
A W209 CLK 63 AMG DTM “Black Series” was produced as a MY2006 in both a coupe and later cabriolet model. Styling cues were taken from the full race car version for the German Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters racing series. The car includes a wider body, carbon fiber accents, and upgraded suspension.
The CLK is designed to fill the mid-luxury market position for coupes and convertibles. It is Mercedes-Benz’s only 4-seat cabriolet. Its direct competitors in the cabriolet market are the Volvo C70 and the Lexus SC430, although it is available with larger engines than any of its direct competitors. The CLK is positioned midway between the BMW 3 series coupe/cabriolet and the 6 series coupe/cabriolet.

The CLK is a superlative vehicle whose handling is exceptionally precise even under extreme cornering, road, and weather conditions, and whose performance is equal to the fastest readily available sports cars on the market. Performance is electronically limited to 135mph in the CLK350 and CLK500 models, and to 155mph in the CLK55 model. An AMG factory option is available for an unrestricted top speed.
The Electronic Stability Control (ESP) and Anti-lock braking system (ABS) are both excellent aids to handling, making such feats as a 90′ degree turn on a typical two lane intersection from 50mph possible using simple hard braking and turning with no significant fishtailing. Although the ESP system can be manually turned off, it never actually allows the wheels to spin completely freely. For example, the ESP system makes drifting (intentional high-power fishtailing) impossible without shutting the ESP system off using a factory test protocol that end-users cannot enable.
Each model seats four and in the US this includes an all-leather interior with burl walnut trim. For Europe the models are available as “Elegance” or “Avantgarde” versions, basically Luxury or Sport specification where the Elegance uses Burr Walnut trim and polished alloy wheels the Avantgarde uses alloy trim and chunky wheels. The price and specification for European models is otherwise the same. The 4 cyl. cars wear 16″ wheels While the CLK320, CLK350 and CLK500 come with 17 inch (432 mm) alloy wheels, the CLK55 AMG sports 18 inch (457 mm) wheels. The cabriolets have a remote-operated automatic soft-top and sensor-controlled roll bars. Since 2000, all US cars come standard with a Tele Aid emergency assistance system, automatic dual-zone air conditioning, 10-way power front seats and rain-sensing windshield wipers. Seven-channel digital surround sound comes standard. A Keyless Go system, navigation system, Parktronic system, and bi-xenon HID headlamps are all available as options. All models come with four side airbags.European cars differ considerably and are usually specced depending on the buyer’s needs.
The cars have a manual sport/comfort mode switch that sets the transmission to start in 2nd gear and shift earlier in comfort mode. The new 7-speed transmission ads about 20% better fuel mileage in real driving conditions over the 5-speed with no loss in performance, although the additional shifting can be noticeable. In the CLK500, at 80mph, the 5-speed transmission runs at about 3000rpm, while the 7-speed runs at about 2200rpm. Both transmissions include automatic best gear finding so that the driver need not keep track of which gear the car is in during performance driving, and in the AMG model, the transmission can be set to stay in the highest possible gear for the best possible performance.
The 5-speed CLK500 gets an average of 15mpg in real city driving conditions, whereas the 7-speed CLK500 get an average of about 18mpg under the same conditions. Both add about 3mpg for highway driving.
The W209 CLK-Class is 2.4 inches (61 mm) longer, 0.7 inches (18 mm) wider and 1.1 inch (28 mm) higher than its predecessor.

In Europe there was also the CLK 200 K (1.8 R4), CLK 220 CDI (2.1 R4 diesel), CLK 240 (2.6 V6), CLK 270 CDI (2.7 R5 diesel), CLK 280 (3.0 V6), CLK 320 CDI (3.0 V6 diesel); (all standard with 6-speed manual transmission, automatic transmission is optional) 2004 Mercedes-Benz CLK55 AMG cabriolet 2004 Mercedes-Benz CLK55 AMG cabriolet.

How can wer repair mercedes 1994 e320 thermostat ? The temperature outside can not be read inside.?

Monday Dec 21, 2009

You don’t really "repair" it. Majority of the time, it’s the sensor that is faulty and has to be replaced. It’s a line that runs from the front bumper up to the fuse box. If that is not the problem, it will be the display unit itself at the bottom of the cluster. The sensor is relatively cheap but if it’s the display that’s the problem, it is much more expensive.
